Dr2 New Economy – Circular wood in the built environment
The province of Noord-Holland has the ambition to become circular and economic opportunities for (re)use of wood are enormous. In the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area alone approximately 1,200 homes could be realised from wood-based waste. Dr2 New Economy developed a successful pilot to reuse beams from a demolished building.
Circular production chains for woody biomass and wood from construction
Commissioned by the province of Noord-Holland, consulting company Dr2 New Economy has identified four promising circular production chains for woody biomass and wood from construction and demolition. They mapped out the opportunities for high-quality wood reuse in Noord-Holland and developed a public calculation model for the various business cases.
The opportunities were further explored with companies from Noord-Holland and the calculation models were sharpened. The bottlenecks and necessary interventions were jointly examined to achieve a circular production chain that is profitable for all parties involved. This was translated into a pilot where all partners joined forces to reuse 1.200 beams from a demolished building.
Dr2 New Economy and the province Noord-Holland received the Circular Award Public 2020 for this project.
